I have had the opportunity to work with the 100Reporters in the capacity of both a designer and developer, since the inception of the film festival four years ago.
The Double Exposure Film Festival celebrates the intersection of film and journalism through a compelling film program and concurrent symposium over the course of four days.
Initially, the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival website was a basic site with symposium listings and film screening times. It has since expanded into larger body of work with more in depth film information, more seminar sessions and interviews, and additional opportunities being provided to potential filmmakers. Each year’s website and marketing design content improves with input from users and staff to help with the flow, organization and navigation process. Along with function and user flow improvements, the overall brand becomes more consistent across the various platforms to promote brand recognition.
Each year, the overall theme of the festival changes and along with it, various stylistic elements such as the main graphics and color palette is modified.
The overall basic style is decided upon by the main partnering agency, Workhorse. One of my tasks is to implement and expand upon the initial concept bringing it into the website and any supporting graphics.
Besides the website, I provided supporting print and digital marketing graphics for both the 2018 and 2019 film festivals. These advertisements were printed in various magazines and newspapers in the area starting two months prior to the festival. The long narrow versions were digital banner graphics placed primarily on news websites and niche documentary film websites. They ranged in size with the goal of creating a visual “punch” showcasing the featured color for that year.

For the 2019 Double Exposure Film Festival, there was more of a focus on providing branded graphics for social media. Previously only featured images were used which usually consisted of film stills or movie posters. This year, we took a more branded approach producing consistent social graphics for the various areas of the site.
Before the next film festival, the Double Exposure festival staff provides a printed report of the previous year’s festival for their sponsors. They decided to provide a photo deck along with report this year that included photos along with brief descriptions of the event.
